Rhododendron Love

Hooray!!! It’s the time of year for the Rhododendrons to bloom! I think they are one of my favorite flowering shrubs because they make me think of the mountains, where they grow wild. The ones at lower elevations are a delicate pink, called rosebay,  and the more showy purple variety, called catawba, thrive at the higher elevations. There’s a lovely You Tube video about that’s just a few  minutes that shows some of the rosebays in their mountain habitat.

There is a spectacular place to see the catawbas called Roan Mountain. Here is a video I found that shows them in all their glory.

In 2012 I wrote about the rhodies in my back yard,  and I noticed the post was from April 22 which is a couple of weeks earlier than they bloomed this year. It’s so fun to be able to look back at older posts and see what was happening, and when. That is one of the great things about blogging (besides my awesome readers, of course!).  I think my writing was more EXPRESSIVE in that post and I LIKE IT!!!! It really shows my love for nature and the glory of the Lord that’s available to us everyday if we just OPEN OUR EYES!  Here is a shot from 2012 ( notice the old porch).

Here are some shots of the RAVISHING rhododendrons in the backyard this year. You will notice how much they’ve grown and our expanded and screened porch.

The mountain people call a thicket of rhododendron a “hell”. They grow very densely and trying to get through one must have been hell, thus the name.  I, on the other hand would have named them “heaven” because that’s what they are to me!!!

OPEN YOUR EYES to God’s beautiful creation, which is all around us!

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-His eternal power and divine nature- have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”  Romans 1:20
